- During the 1960’s, the American Alligator was placed on the endangered species list. Their numbers were rapidly declining in Louisiana, as well as other southeastern states.
- Through the development of farming programs and wetland conservation efforts, the American Alligator population is steadily increasing.
- In 1979, the American Alligator was removed from the endangered species list.
- Today, Louisiana leads the United States in the production of alligator skins.
- Each alligator, or alligator hide harvested in Louisiana must be tagged in accordance with the proper provisions of the Louisiana Department of Wildlife & Fisheries.
